Australia’s inaugural Test match against Afghanistan is as good as cancelled after Cricket Australia stated it “would have no alternative” butSydney Morning Herald
Ever since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul last month, the Afghanistan Cricket Board had flagged the likelihood that its fledgling women’s cricket program was under threat, a view seemingly confirmed on Wednesday when the deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, told SBS that “I don’t think women will be allowed to play cricket” because it was “not necessary” for them to do so.
“What is happening now in Afghanistan is a human rights issue that transcends the game of cricket,” the ACA said in a statement.“And while we would love to see players such as Rashid Khan play in a Test match against Australia, hosting this Test match cannot be considered if that same opportunity to play the game is denied to Roya Samim and her teammates.”
“Our perspective has been passed on to the ICC, and we’ve urged other global sporting authorities to take a stand. “Australians instinctively get that our national teams represent us all when they wear our colour,” he said.“To play the Afghan national team is to play the country - one that is ruled by the Taliban. We legitimise them by taking the field.
