'Gentleman' Bob Wood and offsider 'Big Pete' brought a unique Aussie flair to traditional tattooing, creating designs with larrikin character and imprinting a style on the industry still in demand today.

"It was a closely guarded industry," says Rhys Gordon, Australian tattoo history enthusiast and owner of Surry Hills studio Little Tokyo.Machines not just for anyone Tattoo artists would approach Mr Wood, tell him how they liked to work and he would build a machine to suit their needs.Many attribute the elevated artistry of the modern Sydney tattoo industry to high-quality machines such as Mr Wood's.For Dean Reardon, an artist at Spider and Fly parlour, Chippendale, it was the mechanical aspect of tattooing that drew him to the industry.
Unlike the traditional American style of tattooing, the Australian style also has more emotion, with the larrikin character of clients shining through.
