Fair Australia field director tells volunteers ticks and crosses issue could affect large proportion of vote despite less than 1% of votes in 1999 referendum being informal

Anti-voice campaigners are making unfounded claims about the impact ticks and crosses on ballot papers could have on the outcome of the referendum, with one campaigner claiming to volunteers that the issue could account for “5% of the vote” being discounted.

Fair Australia is the anti-voice campaign from conservative lobby group Advance. The video was first reported by the Nine newspapers. “Now that the AEC has kind of … what’s a really polite way of saying this … have shown their teeth when it comes to ticks and crosses, that’s actually worth 5% of the vote. That in its own right, whether it’s a tick or a cross, you’re talking about 5% of the vote. We know that. We know that,” he said.

As Inglis paused at this point, appearing to search for a word, a participant on the call interjected with the word “sneaky”.
