They are likely the most-recognisable fighter in the Royal Australian Air Force, but the days of spotting a F/A-18 'Classic Hornet' could be over.
The F/A-18 "Classic Hornet" was retired in 2020, but none have been secured for display in Queensland. The Department of Defence says the process has finished, but the museum volunteers are vowing to fight on.
Aside from the Classic Hornet, the museum features an example of every jet fighter flown by the RAAF."We have to say we're quite disappointed and dismayed on behalf of the people of Queensland that one of these aircraft – which is such a significant part of Australia's aviation history – won't be able to be preserved or displayed."
It was March 2002, just months after the September 11 attacks in the United States, and then-prime minister John Howard was hosting world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II.Air Commodore Dave Pietsche told Australian Associated Press at the time an unknown plane was flying toward restricted airspace and RAAF commanders had authority to order it be shot down.
Mr Hunt said it was a "very very curious" decision made by the former federal government to not have any of the F/A-18s sent to Queensland.
