Former Labor MP Michael Danby has accused the Victorian government of being “one of the most centralist and left wing government’s ever” ahead of Premier Daniel Andrews' recommendation to appoint his factional ally Jacinta Allan as his Deputy.

“Normally you have people from each faction, again this is further consolidation of power, and it goes to the fact that the Victorian Labor Party has no internal democracy,” he told Sky News Australia’s Chris Kenny.

Mr Danby shot down concerns the recommendations and cabinet reshuffle would threaten Mr Andrews’ chances of reelection in November. She said she was"humbled and grateful" to have the support of colleagues for the appointment of deputy premier. "To be contemplating the opportunity to take on the reins from an outstanding deputy premier in James Merlino, he has set a very high benchmark in terms of his leadership, his calmness, his unflappable approach to the role, is an outstanding example to follow."
