When Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky stared into each other’s souls in their 400-metre freestyle final in Tokyo, they inhabited a universe of their own. Their struggle transfixed millions of viewers throughout the world before the Australian surged to her first Olympic crown in unforgettable scenes.
But one swimmer was already creating interest among followers of the sport. Canada’s Summer McIntosh finished fourth, in a time of 4:02.42s. It was well behind Titmus’ winning time of 3:56.69, but noteworthy because of her age: She was just 14. It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for Titmus. She contracted COVID-19 after the national titles but said her training block since then had put her in strong shape to be at or near her best when racing begins in Birmingham.“Things have changed since then,” Titmus said. “Getting COVID post-trials put a bit of a spanner in the works. I feel like myself again and I can’t wait to race at Comm Games.
