Opinion: No minister, we can’t charge the unvaxxed for COVID care
One of my favourite patients was a 60-year-old man named Noel. He struggled a bit through life, but he had the gift of the gab. A bachelor from Sydney’s inner west, his favourite tales included many of the interesting characters from the neighbourhood.
Even if it is someone who has chosen not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 – and who, as a result, becomes infected with the virus.The NSW Health Minister, however, has suggested the state government is considering ways to force people who have not received the jab to pay for their medical bills if they require hospital treatment for COVID.
The right to health is also central to the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights. There are three guiding principles of the charter. In addition to stating that everyone has a right to access healthcare, as well as the highest possible standard of physical and mental healthcare, it states: “Australia is a society made up of people with different cultures and ways of life, and the Charter acknowledges and respects these differences.”COVID has put incredible pressure on our health system.
