The father of a cyclist who was struck by Daniel Andrews ' family SUV in 2013 has told the former Victorian premier to “finally tell the truth” about the near-fatal accident or face defamation action in the federal court. The father of a cyclist who was struck by Daniel Andrews ' family SUV in 2013 has told the former Victorian premier and his wife Catherine to “finally tell the truth” about the accident or face defamation action over their previous statements on the matter.
However lawyers for Mr Meuleman have now threatened the couple with a defamation suit, with the cyclist's father Peter Meuleman telling The Herald Sun they could either “tell the truth” and apologise to Ryan, or let the case proceed to court. Mr Meuleman is already suing his former lawyers – the Labor-aligned law firm, Slater and Gordon – accusing them of breaching their duty of care when they negotiated an $80,000 compensation payout from the transport accident commission.
According to police records, Catherine Andrews was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, and the couple have insisted the vehicle came to a “complete stop” before turning right and being “t-boned” by Mr Meuleman’s bike. “This so-called report was commissioned by lawyers on behalf of their clients who are seeking money through the courts by suing their former lawyers. We did nothing wrong,” the couple said in a joint statement.
“The recording confirms the previous statements we’ve made on this matter. The cyclist came flying through from the bike path at Ridley St and T-boned our car at speed,” they said.
