As the U.S. sees an uptick in cases of COVID-19, doctors are warning of a possible tripledemic with coronavirus, the flu and RSV.
With an updated booster and an entirely new vaccine, this year could be different. But some say barriers still exist making it tough for everyone to get vaccinated."I heard that there's going to be a surge of COVID cases," said Cruz, who works in Seattle. "I'd rather stay protected and get it instead of catching it myself."
"This is a really exciting moment because we have vaccines for the three most common winter respiratory viruses and we never had that before," added Dr. Giridhar Mallya, senior policy advisor for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is urging equitable distribution of COVID, RSV and flu vaccines. It's pushing health care providers to make vaccine appointments available when people are available, like evenings and weekends.
"I think another thing that a lot of people don't think about when it comes to vaccines are policies like paid leave or subsidized childcare," Mallya said. "We know parents are doing the best that they can to care for their kids and families and to not have to take off from work just to get that vaccine we think is incredibly important."
"If you have insurance, these vaccines will be covered including Medicare and Medicaid," Mallya added."We feel if we can get many people vaccinated who are eligible, it can prevent serious illness, hospitalization and even ease the burden on hospitals, which were really overwhelmed last year by this tripledemic," Mallya said."I'm always around people, so I'd rather just stay protected," Cruz said.
