The frontman for the controversial Saudi-backed series has hinted a topline event in Australia could be on the cards in 2023.
Greg Norman has dropped his strongest hint yet about plans to bring a rebel Saudi-backed event to Australia as the chase heats up for The Open champion Cameron Smith to head up an all-star team in 2023.
Sydney looms as the most likely landing point for Norman’s LIV Golf project if he comes to Australia, but there’s been no confirmation of a preferred course. Dustin Johnson, Donald Trump and Bryson DeChambeau will take to the former president’s course at Bedminster, New Jersey.Australian golf audiences have been starved of elite tournaments for several years, local officials desperately trying to assemble star-studded fields for the Australian Open and Australian PGA later in 2022.
The US-based PGA Tour has suspended members who opted to join the breakaway circuit and said anyone else who makes the jump will face the same fate. Several Australians have already played in the first two LIV Golf events, including two-time Australian Open champion Matt Jones and last year’s Australian PGA winner Jed Morgan.
