North Carolina case triggers nationwide investigation, recall on fruit pouches

A nationwide food recall that started, in part, because of a concerning case in western North Carolina.

A brand of fruit puree pouches has been recalled because it may contain extremely high concentrations of lead.about WanaBana Brand Apple Cinnamon Puree pouches on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023. The FDA issued a voluntary recall of all WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches regardless of lot code or expiration. WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches are sold nationally and are available through multiple retailers including Sam’s Club, Amazon and Dollar Tree.

The announcement came after a joint investigation with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services into cases of elevated blood lead levels in children in Catawba, Cleveland, and Madison counties, according to the state health department. We spoke with the director of the Madison County Health Department about how they first discovered the fruit puree pouches may be contaminated. Madison County Health Director Tammy Cody said parents should reach out to their children's pediatrician if their child has been consuming the product.

NCDHHS recommends parents dispose of the products immediately.
