Thousands of North Korean troops sent to support Russia's war effort in Ukraine have suffered heavy casualties, according to a US military official.
A senior US military official revealed that Pyongyang has deployed thousands of troops to bolster Russia's war effort, including to the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian forces made territorial gains earlier this year. The official, speaking anonymously, estimated that the DPRK ( North Korea 's official name) has suffered several hundred casualties, ranging from minor wounds to fatalities. Soldiers of all ranks have been affected.
The official noted that these troops lack combat experience, which likely contributes to their heavy losses against Ukrainian forces. These comments follow Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky's assertion that Russia has utilized North Korean troops in an intense offensive in Kursk over several days. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, North Korea and Russia have solidified their military ties, with a key defense pact signed in June coming into force this month.
