North Lanarkshire Council is to close 39 swimming pools, sports centres, libraries and community facilities – including the Aquatec in Motherwell, Sir Matt Busby sports centre in Bellshill, John Smith pool in Airdrie and Shotts leisure centre.

Dozens were in the public gallery at the Civic Centre as members of the policy and strategy committee voted, with one shouting out as the £4.7 million saving decision was made: “Whover voted to close those facilities is a disgrace and you’ll lose your seat at the next election.”
