Ron Joseph, one of the most influential figures in the modern history of North Melbourne and in the post-war VFL/AFL competition, has died. He was 77.

Ron Joseph leaving a meeting with the AFL about relocating North Melbourne to the Gold Coast in 2007.Joseph was renowned for having been among the people who lured Ron Barassi to North Melbourne in the early ’70s, transforming the club with premierships in 1975 and 1977. Joseph, then North president Dr Allen Aylett and Albert Mantello famously signed Barassi as coach with his signature on a napkin at the Old Melbourne Inn in 1972.
Joseph had started at North as assistant secretary in 1964, quickly taking over the senior role as secretary – essentially as the person who ran the club day to day. His position became that of general manager in 1977, which he held until 1986. In that period, he presided over the signing of ex-Hawthorn coach John Kennedy.
Joseph also played an important role in the successful campaign to keep North Melbourne from moving to the Gold Coast, joining James Brayshaw’s board in 2007 and serving on it until 2010.Joseph was also an influential player manager in between his club stints, managing a host of AFL stars including Glenn Archer and Anthony Stevens.
