It has seen backlash on Twitter
A Northamptonshire councillor has sparked a Twitter storm by calling homosexuality a "sin". Cllr King Lawal, who represents Brickhill & Queensway in Wellingborough, said "those who have Pride should Repent of their sins and turn to Jesus Christ".
"Because of Pride Satan fell as an arch Angel. Pride is not a virtue but a Sin. Those who have Pride should Repent of their sins and turn to Jesus Christ. He can save you. #PrideMonth #Pride2023 #PrideParade"In follow-up tweets, he said he wanted to "clear something up" as people voiced their opposition to his views. He said: "In no way am I suggesting that LGBT people should be persecuted or should not live freely in which or whatever way they want.
When one user challenged Cllr Lawal, he replied: "I represent many people with many different views. Not everyone shares the same view. "To show that a colourful world is something to be celebrated & to show my love for all things queer and colourful, please enjoy these photos of me and my lovely friends celebrating pride…"
Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of North Northamptonshire Councillor and George Candler, Interim Chief Executive, has since issued a joint statement.
