AFL: Despite both team losing over the weekend, Garry Lyon believes the Kangaroos could be ahead of the Hawks in terms of their rebuild.

After an incredible first half against Fremantle, North Melbourne’s ‘Northball’ method has highlighted the stagnant progress of a seemingly similar-placed Hawthorn.

“He’d been there for a long time; he had four premierships — the suspicion was for a long time that the ‘Mitchell method’ would be more conducive to a younger list,” Lyon added. “The fact that they were back-to-back, was so stark,” Lyon said.Statistically speaking, the difference in the first quarters by North Melbourne and Hawthorn was astonishing.The Kangaroos took just 13 marks in their first quarter – roughly 10 less than they normally would per quarter in 2024 — yet managed 20 inside 50’s for their four goals.

Brownlow medallist and former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley was tentative to compare the two clubs, highlighting that they aren’t in the same phase of their rebuild.
