Several northern Mayors are taking buses back under public control in a bid to improve services and cut fares Car ownership rose by 18 per cent in Newcastle, 16 per cent in Doncaster, by 15 per cent in Leeds and by 14 per cent in Sheffield between 2012-2022. It would potentially mean charging drivers who use the most polluting vehicles when driving through certain areas.
It is expected to generate up to £9m a year, with £2 from every charge going to the Government and the rest to be used by Bradford Council to cover costs and environmental projects. The news comes after a summer of widespread disruption on rail and bus services as a result of reduced timetables, staff shortages and industrial action.
“Years of underfunding has meant that communities across our area have had to contend with a system that’s too disjointed, too unreliable, and too expensive. From day one as mayor, it’s been my ambition to fundamentally reform our broken transport system by building a London-style network that’s cheaper, greener, cleaner and offers people a genuine alternative to the car.
“Thanks to a citywide effort, Leeds’ air quality has been improving every year and we’ve set out an ambitious Leeds Air Quality Strategy to ensure this trend continues, so that we can better protect and improve the health of our residents from dirty air.”
