🚆 Cities including Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle, and Hull have all been affected with rail services either cancelled at short notice, or delayed
Commuters in the North have been hit by a “meltdown” on the rail network this morning as one operator blamed staff sickness for the cancellation of dozens of services.
The situation has outraged northern leaders who say the ongoing disruption is damaging the regional economies and requires Government intervention. A TransPennine Express spokesperson said: “A track defect at Huyton is causing disruption to our services between Liverpool and Manchester this morning, with the impact also being felt further afield across our network – as far as Newcastle.
“We are sorry to any customers who have been affected by any of these issues and are advising people to check their journeys carefully before travelling.” Replying to Andy Burnham on Twitter, one passenger wrote: “Beyond fed up as a northern business owner wanting easy and affordable Links with the city. It’s worse now than 15 years ago when I was a trainee lawyer.”
A spokesperson for Avanti West Coast said: “We know making tickets available as early as possible is a key priority for our customers and we’re working hard to do this. Our weekday tickets are available into December but weekends are made more difficult by engineering work, which is taking place almost every weekend until Christmas. We are making progress though, and by early November we’ll be selling weekend tickets four weeks in advance.
