Stargazers were treated to two stunning displays at once
A dazzling display of colour transformed the night sky as the Northern Lights shone above the North West - while another phenomenon was also visible. Conditions were perfect for aurora to be visible for many people last night , including in Greater Manchester.
The Perseid annual shower peaked last night, meaning 'shooting stars' could be seen rushing through the glorious sky. People looking out for the Northern Lights need a clear sky and minimal light pollution - which isn't always easy to find.But images have been shared online showing the Northern Lights visible in areas including Bolton, Irlam and Wigan overnight.
"Another CME is likely late August 12 or early August 13, this will bring a chance of visible aurora to Scotland and parts of Northern England overnight." According to the latest forecast, there is a chance that some parts of the UK could see the Northern Lights again tonight. "During August 14 activity should return back to background levels, with significant enhancements currently unlikely and any visible aurora restricted to far northern Scotland." Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
