After seven years and millions of dollars spent, the NT government has abandoned its treaty process with Aboriginal people, sparking criticism from opposition parties and treaty advocates.

The Northern Territory government has officially ended its pursuit of a treaty with Aboriginal people after seven years of consultations and millions of dollars spent. Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, of the Country Liberal Party ( CLP ), stated that her government never supported a treaty and has dismantled the previous Labor government's plans.

This decision has been met with criticism from the opposition and treaty advocates, who argue it disregards decades of advocacy and ignores the calls for self-determination from Aboriginal communities. The treaty process, initiated by the Labor government in 2018, involved extensive consultations and travel across the territory, costing millions of dollars. Opposition Leader Selena Uibo, a former treaty minister under the Labor government, expressed disappointment but not surprise at the CLP's decision. She acknowledged the significance of treaty discussions in communities like Arnhem, where it has been a long-standing conversation. Yiŋiya Guyula, an independent politician representing Arnhem Land and a staunch treaty advocate, described the CLP's decision as 'saddening' and 'ignorant', emphasizing the need for the government to understand and listen to the voices advocating for treaty as a means to address ongoing injustices.Instead of pursuing a treaty, the CLP government has pledged to focus on empowering Aboriginal communities through restoring local control to remote community councils. Chief Minister Finocchiaro stated that their government is committed to giving Aboriginal communities a greater say in matters that affect them. The history of treaty negotiations in the NT is complex and fraught with challenges. Some Larrakia people, for instance, believe it is no longer the most pressing issue for their community
