Mr Green said the initiative gave people in Kintore a much-needed alternative to being sentenced through the traditional court system with little cultural support. NT Legal Aid solicitor Finbar Piper, who attended the first Kintore hearing on Thursday, said the system could fill gaps in service delivery for young people in remote communities.
Jared Sharp says the involvement of language in community courts allows the defendant to be better involved.North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency principal legal officer Jared Sharp said community courts aimed to incorporate the "strength of culture" and the "authority of elders" to break the cycle of reoffending."You'll see much more involvement with the defendant, who's speaking in the process rather than being talked at.
