Police in Tiffin, Ohio, say it appears the man used high-octane racing fuel to light the fire.
TIFFIN, Ohio — A Northwest Ohio man was flown to a hospital in Cleveland after he was seriously injured in an explosion while attempting to start a campfire using racing fuel, authorities say.
A news release from the Tiffin Police Department says emergency workers were called just before 4 a.m. Saturday after a explosion was reported in the backyard of a home. When rescue workers arrived, they found the 43-year-old man lying near a stack of wood near a fire pit. Police say it appears the man used high-octane racing fuel to light the fire. The explosion occurred as the man poured the fuel onto the stack of wood while he had a lit cigarette in his mouth, police say.
The victim first was taken to Tiffin Mercy Hospital, then was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His condition was unavailable Sunday night. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
