Four of these workmen appear to have been distracted from the jobs they were meant to be doing at a location in Watford that is no longer easy to work out.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at this picture which gives a glimpse of how this part of the town once looked. The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “I wonder if anyone recognises anyone in this photograph?“The location can take a bit of working out as only a couple of elements are unchanged. The location is the old Market Place in the High Street with Market Street just off to the left of the photo.

“The building with the small panes of glass on the left has been redeveloped - it had been a pub - and the shop on the right has had new windows installed over the years. “Through the arch which still retains its appearance is the side of what had been the post office in Market Street.”
