A public artwork commemorating the coronavirus outbreak will be built on Sydney's northern beaches after the local council approved spending more than $100,000 to help support the arts community.
Last week councillors endorsed the commissioning of the artwork for the coastal walk under construction between Manly and Palm Beach. Cr Rory Amon, who voted against the project, said the planned artwork was "absurd" and "tone deaf" during the coronavirus pandemic. "That is so far from what has actually been endorsed. This is about supporting our local creative community who are doing it tough," Cr Regan said.
In a response to "commonly asked questions", published on the organisation's website on Wednesday, the council insisted the artwork would not "be a giant germ statue on the beach" as some people had "seen in the media".
