Kim Solomon has a solid group of friends in Sydney. The only problem is that none of them is actuallyLike many who have moved here - in her case from Cape Town, South Africa, in 2004 - Solomon has always struggled to penetrate Sydney’s cliquey, geographically segregated community.

“A few times after work, I’ve stopped in to a bar in the city to have a drink, do some work on my laptop. No one - not a single person will talk to you,” she says. “Going out in your 30s to bars in London and in South Africa, and even in the States, you’ll get talking to people around you. That doesn’t happen here.”

“In America, if you’re an expat, people are generally very interested and want to connect with you,” she says, “But in Australia there’s this fear that people are going to just leave and move away.” Nowak says: “I always heard that Melbourne was friendlier. Not to say Sydney was not friendly. I just found it easier in Melbourne than in Sydney.”

About 70 per cent of Foura’s members are women; men appear more reluctant to admit they are lonely or seeking out new friends. The bulk of the membership is 25 to 40, but there are plenty of empty-nesters too.More than half are expats or people who have returned to Sydney after time abroad. But there are also born and bred Sydneysiders looking to expand their circles.

“My mum would probably think it’s slightly weird, but she probably felt the same about Uber when that came out,” Bogatez says.
