Adam Bandt has sent another warning to Labor that its position on climate change is “untenable” as he rubbishes claims of a domestic gas shortage.

The minor party – which now carries more weight in Parliament with four MPs and 12 Senators – agreed to pass Labor’s signature Climate Change bill despite failing to secure concessions on future fossil fuel projects.

The ACCC said LNG exporters needed to redirect excess supplies to the domestic market or Australia would risk its energy security heading into next year.

“Even people who think that there is some role in the transition for gas even they make it crystal clear that we’ve got enough gas in the system to do that; we don’t need to be opening up new projects to do that,” he said. Meanwhile, the government has wasted no time on capitalising on the passage of its Climate Change Bill through the lower house, announcing it wouldClimate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the bill was “not the end of the work” as he outlined how the government will begin meeting its pledge to ensure renewables comprise of more than 80 per cent of the energy grid by the end of the decade.
