ANALYSIS: Not all Australians felt the same way about the Queen's death. But only a few were heard

For royalists, the picture of a young Elizabeth dressed in all her finery — the Kohinoor, the royal sceptre with the "stolen" Great Star of Africa — represents a pinnacle of power and dignity.

It was the same when Prince Philip died. As soon as the news broke, he was eulogised, his many racist and deeply offensive comments whitewashed as "gaffes".But the Queen is considered above criticism by many – especially compared to the rest of her family. I have only been in Australia for 20 years and am a firm believer in respecting the culture of the land. They had been here longer than all of us – some say at least 60,000 years. What about them? Could they talk about their dispossession, their feelings of – no doubt – anger at what the gloved and jewel-encased hand of monarchy had wrought upon their people?

Those who remain lucky enough to be untouched by colonialism see no evil. There is no ambiguity, no unfinished business, no injustices to recount.
