The government was on the defensive over the aged care COVID-19 crisis when Parliament resumed.
by stressing it was important to differentiate between those who died while infected with coronavirus, and those who died because of it.
In the Senate, where Labor moved a motion calling for the dismissal of Aged care Minister Richard Colbeck, the government’s Senate leader Simon Birmingham said Labor was “living in an alternative universe” by creating the impression COVID-19 could be “locked in a box”.
“When people are passing away with COVID, that does not necessarily mean that they have passed away because of COVID,” he said.Since the onset of omicron late last year, more than 9000 people in the sector have died, of which 682 were COVID-19 related.
