Health Minister Mark Butler has accused the tobacco industry of marketing vaping products to children.
has accused tobacco companies of targeting Australian children with vaping products and promised to work with the states to crack down on black market sales.
Health Minister Mark Butler told Labor MPs the use of damaging vape products had “exploded” in Australia.More than a third of Australians using vapes and e-cigarette products are younger than 25. Alcohol and Drug Foundation statistics show about 14 per cent of 12- to 17-year-olds have tried an e-cigarette, with about 32 per cent of the group having used one in the past month.
Under federal laws, it is illegal to import liquid nicotine into Australia, unless prescribed by a GP as a method to quit smoking. But e-cigarettes and vape juices containing nicotine remain widely available from black market players, with online and retail outlets selling to children. “Recent evidence shows increasing vaping, especially in children and adolescents, even though it is illegal except on prescription,” Professor Banks said.
