Plans for a $1.2 million upgrade of a playground in Sydney’s eastern suburbs have attracted opposition from a sailing club and locals who say it will reduce access to Sydney Harbour

.

Woollahra Sailing Club vice commodore Stan Bland opposes the proposed playground upgrade at Lyne Park in Rose Bay.But Woollahra Sailing Club and some residents argue the project will curtail access to the harbour for sailors and other water users, amid increasing competition for public space. “Rigging boats can be dangerous and it is important from a safety point of view that there is adequate space for rigging.”

“The club has already lost many sailors due to the lack of open space to rig both for members and members of the public as the council has over the years continuously expanded the playground along the foreshore,” he said. In contrast, the council spokesman said the playground upgrade posed no danger to the public and would not reduce access to the water for the sailing club, including the licensed rigging areas on public land, which it rents for $2 a month. He said the club’s suggestion to relocate the playground and toilet block would drastically decrease the design elements of the upgrade.

“I would like to see Council work with the club to free up other space for it to store craft and infrastructure behind the club to give it more rigging space,” she said.
