The Coalition will hit the Albanese government hard over soaring power prices at the next election as the opposition prepares unveil its own policies with a major energy shift on the cards.

A year after launching an internal investigation into developing a domestic nuclear energy industry, the Coalition is preparing to release its proposal to transition key coal mining regions into hubs for modular nuclear reactors.

However, Labor has steadfastly ruled out any energy transition which includes nuclear – labelling the baseload power source “dumb” and extremely expensive. “Labor has not been honest with the Australian people about its climate and energy policy which is why households are now paying some of the highest power bills in the world,” he said.

Some Coalition MPs raised the modular nuclear reactors as a funding option for the Clean Energy Finance Corporation while in government, but the proposal has consistently been shut down by Labor.
