Strange flavours? Go for it. There is one thing about hot cross buns I cannot abide, though.

When it comes to hot cross buns, I can put up with a lot. That the baby Jesus is barely a day out of the womb before supermarkets start conjuring up his death by dressing spicy, little breakfast cakes with the method of his execution doesn’t bother me.

Strange flavours? Go for it. I wouldn’t call it a hot cross bun, but no one buying something that boasts jalapeno and cheddar as ingredients is under any illusion that it’s going to taste like anything other than when a 35-year-old white guy decides to “give cooking a go”. There is one thing I cannot abide, though. Something that goes back much further than your cousin Dean’s mayo-soaked “American casserole”. So far back that its very inclusion seems inseparably tied to the word “traditional”.Mixed peel. I know why it’s in there, it comes from a time when access to things like fruit was so rare that even scraps were seen as a treat, however calling mixed peel “fruit” is like calling Judas an apostle.
