Nat Barr has questioned whether Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should jet off to Asia for the summit season or stay in Australia amid his campaign for the Voice to Parliament.
The Sunrise host posed the question on Tuesday, as the Prime Minister departed for Jakarta, Indonesia where he will attend the ASEAN and East Asia summits. While his participation in the summits is widely accepted as an important duty, the timing of the trip is not seen as ideal by Barr.
A recent Newspoll showed support for the Voice to Parliament had dropped into the minority for the first time since it was announced. Despite this, Barr's suggestion was dismissed by Hildebrand, who argued the Prime Minister's attendance was an important counterbalance to the influence of China. It is understood that Mr Albanese's decision to visit Manila for talks with Filipino President Ferdinand"Bongbong" Marcos was a deliberate show of support and the two leaders may announce joint patrols in the country's waters to stave off China's aggression.
