Once considered a boys’ club, a growing cohort of younger women are starting to invest in the stock market as they look to increase their financial security.

It took a global pandemic for Rachel Lamarche to try something she’d wanted to do for years.

She rarely trades, sees investing as long term and never makes rash decisions - all investment strategies that research has shown are common among women.“The saying goes don’t invest what you can’t afford to lose. I’m quite careful. I don’t invest lots on one company, I invest almost at the minimum or a little bit more on a variety of companies,” she says. “I’m not in it to make a quick buck.

“I think that’s why you see that difference in profiles - that more diversified investment strategy, the use of more managed funds and ETFs, versus trying to pick a winner on a stock tip. We’ve found more male investors have that type of preference.”Younger women are also flocking to Millennial-focused trading platforms such as Sharesies, which came to Australia in early 2021.

“I think definitely in the last two years, we’ve broken down that stereotype that you have to be a male stockbroker to invest in the market, or you need lots of money to start.”This rings true for Lamarche. While there are some types of investments that she would never go near, she has been able to invest in a way she feels comfortable with.

Senior women working in equity markets and finance say this social media trend is changing the conversation to make the space more accessible for women.Nabtrade’s director of SMSF and investor behaviour, Gemma Dale, says while the overall proportion of women investing is still low, there are clear signs that number is increasing and the trend is being driven by younger women.
