In mid-September, as you walk past Hamer Hall, look up. A highlight of Melbourne’s newest arts festival may be hanging from a harness above you | NickdMiller

Women’s Circus performers Vivienne Halat, Melinda Smith OAM, Tarn Scully, Oaka Scully, Jo Dunbar, Emma J Hawkins and Anso Swann Biguet.“There’s a saying in the disability community: ‘Nothing about us without us’,” says activist and writer Carly Findlay, one of the “foundation artists” for the festival. She was asked in 2019, along with dancer/choreographer Joshua Pether and New Zealand dancer Rodney Bell, to establish the fundamental principles of the event.

’, that we are paced to allow our bodies and our minds to rest and do things in our own time. We wanted to make things as accessible as possible.”is no exception. At Thursday’s launch, the ensemble showed an excerpt from the piece, co-directed by Jo Dunbar and Tarn Scully. The performers moved in synchrony and out, rising and falling, one moment slow and deliberate, other times urgent and emphatic.

“It’s about these individuals who come together and create, and have the power to create change. Often in the work it’s been led by the disabled-identifying artists.” The new state Minister for Creative Industries, Steve Dimopoulos, said the city’s arts institutions had traditionally fallen short in broad accessibility and inclusivity – but that was changing. This new festival, for instance, is being staged in partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne.
