An injury crisis for the Waratahs has given a dream opportunity for Shute Shield hooker and concreter Jay Fonokalafi to face his childhood heroes the Blues this Saturday.
It was another hot day on the tools in Sydney when part-time tradie and Gordon hooker Jay Fonokalafi got a call from Waratahs coach Darren Coleman on Wednesday that changed his life.
“I was just at work,” Fonokalafi told Waratahs media. “We had just finished pouring cement and then one of the managers rocked up and just said to have my phone by me. Waratahs hooker Jay Fonokalafi prepares for his debut off the bench against the Blues on Saturday in Sydney, the plucky battler who finally gets his shot at fulfilling his sporting potential after a long period toiling in the shadows against all the odds.
“I’m just grateful I just didn’t give up , especially having my partner to push me because I was going just play local footy back home and she just said to give a one more crack and here we are.”
