Seven-time champion Djokovic took the first set in just 29 minutes and was well on his way to the second when the crowd started to howl “Ruuune” after virtually every point he won.
The Serb held up his arms plaintively and looked to umpire Nico Helwerth in query, who promptly explained that they were not jeering Djokovic but shouting his opponent’s name.Far from distract him though, the No 2 seed seemed to use it as motivation, taking a long stare up into the East Stand after sealing the second set and then completing the win in just two hours and three minutes.
“To all the fans that have respect and stayed here tonight, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart,” Djokovic said. “And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a gooood night.
