There were beautiful scenes at Paris 2024 when tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal faced off. The match came to a sad end, however, failing to reach the dizzying heights of yesteryear when the two were at the peak of their powers. Djokovic thrashed his great rival 6-1 6-4 in what might be the last time we ever see the champions play each other. The moment was not lost on the veterans.

“I cannot live every single day with the feeling that it’s going to be, or not going to be, my last match. I come here, I try my best, I play,” he said. “And when I decide to stop playing, or when I decide to keep going, I will let you know.” What was clear for the first 90 minutes against Djokovic is that Nadal was diminished, nowhere near the skilled and ever-hustling version of himself that won a record 14 French Open trophies on the same red clay at Roland Garros.
