Callum Peters has officially confirmed himself Australian boxing’s Next Big Thing, scoring a brutally lopsided decision win over American Joeshon James – who finished this one with his right eye almost swollen shut.
Wardley vs Dubois | Sunday 10 May from 1am AEST | Two of the worlds best heavyweights clash in a mouthwatering Manchester showdown, as WBO champion Fabio Wardley faces ‘Dynamite’ Daniel Dubois. |Long hyped as No Limit’s most exciting fighter, the 2024 Olympian has now taken his unbeaten professional run to seven straight against a Californian who, coming into the Newcastle Entertainment Centre co-main, had never lost to anyone who wasn’t a world champion.
Despite going for longer in this fight than ever before in his career, 23-year-old Peters continually walked forward, throwing punches in bunches as he went, against a challenger who has previously been a sparring partner for no less than Canelo Alavarez. The Aussie also dropped James in the fourth with a devastating left rip to the body and slowed only once himself, when sent to his corner in the eighth to have tape removed from a glove.
After 10 brutal rounds, in which he landed double the punches of his rival, Peters eventually took a near shut out on all three judges’ scorecards 100-89, 100-89, 99-90.
“I feel good,” he grinned understatedly. “I’m working hard and it’s all working out. “I felt like I rushed it a bit in the first couple of rounds. But if you’re not landing, you’re not boxing.
”Peters then thanked his American rival for the fight – “thanks for coming down, long way from home, mad respect” – before No Limit’s George Rose entered the ring to talk up his young star.
“He’s 23 years old and was up against one of the most dangerous fighters in the world. “He came down here to stop 50 Cal … but Cal has got a huge future. He’s beat everyone here, he’s beat the next level, now we go to another level again”.
Wonderfully, the win came only one fight after hyped Australian light heavyweight Kirra Ruston also confirmed his own incredible potential, needing just three rounds to finish Turk Berkay Varol with a series of brutal body shots. Despite suffering a nasty cut over his left eye in the opening exchanges, Ruston pulverised his previously unbeaten rival and then admitted afterwards that he had been unable to see due to all the blood.
“So I don’t know how Tim did it, man,” he laughed afterwards, referencing the elder Tszyu sibling’s unforgettable bloodbath against Sebastian Fundora. “I started seeing drips and painted the canvas. “So it didn’t pan out exactly how I wanted. But I got the job done.
”Asked by Main Event’s Ben Damon if the cut had seen him look to push for a finish, the fighter confirmed as much saying: “I didn’t want him to think he could get it over me once he saw the blood”. Coming into this fight, there were plenty who questioned No Limit’s decision to pit their rising Olympic star against a rival who had only ever lost the once -- and to incumbent WBC interim champ Lester Martinez.
“This is my chance to prove a point to the doubters, prove I’m at this top level,” he said. “Yes, I know has fought some good guys. But he hasn’t fought me. And with the pressure I bring, I make people feel uncomfortable in the ring. They’re not fighting against me … they’re surviving. ”
