New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she has not given the green light for rugby league to resume, despite the NRL saying it has been given the go-ahead to restart the season on May 28.
Pearce pointed to the flattening of the curve as justification for optimism, but deputy chief medical officer Paul Kelly expressed scepticism about whether the league could start up again as early as May.
Breaking down the latest news and research to understand how the world is living through an epidemic, this is the ABC's Coronacast podcast. "What we know about this virus, if we don't have these social-distancing measures, [is that] one person can lead to 400 other cases within a month. We just cannot afford at this stage to be considering that happening.
Pearce used mines, factories, hairdressers and barbers as examples of workplaces that were still operating under the public health order, and said the league wanted to"play a leading role in the revival of the economy"."Because the normal [funeral] rituals are not possible at the moment, it is very important for us — and our mental health — to create new ones."

NRL season could go ahead for the “well-being of the athletes” | Sky News AustraliaSports commentator Jaslyn Hewitt says it is “a very interesting time to see what is actually going to happen with the NRL” as talks continue between the code’s heads and government officials to discuss the season resuming as early as May 28. \n\nOpposition leader Anthony Albanese said NRL clubs were allowed to begin making preparations to resume the competition weeks after it was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, however the season would not be going ahead without the approval of health officials. \n\nMs Hewitt told Sky News it was still unclear what the status of the NRL’s 2020 season was as “on one hand we’ve got Peter V’landy saying he’s got written approval from government authorities saying they can go ahead,' despite Mr Albanese’s announcement. \n\nShe said it was also important that the season go ahead for the “well-being of the athletes” as well as for financial reasons as “a lot of these players aren’t on the multi-million contract that we suspect a lot them are on”. \n\n“You have got a lot of players on a one salary income that are definitely keen to get back out there and I think you could see that from the reports of all the players on their Instagram and Twitter accounts when that news was announced last week,” she said. \n\nShe said players could also be at greater risk of injury if they rushed into playing competitive matches after weeks of breaking their usual training routines.
