Scrums are in danger of being sent to the rugby league scrapheap with the NRL announcing experimental rule changes for the final round of the season | MichaelChammas SMHsport

The diminishing credibility of scrums has been a topic of debate, with the contested aspect of the set-piece having disappeared over the last two decades.

"I think there's a general view that scrums are part of the heritage of the game," NRL head of football Graham Annesley said. In the two allocated experimental matches, the bunker will review all live try-scoring decisions and have the authority to intervene before the conversion is taken. The added benefit is also increasing the fatigue factor, with players to receive less of a breather while the bunker is reviewing the play.

The NRL will move back towards tradition by only allowing players nominated as forwards on the team sheet, and interchange players who have replaced a forward, to pack into scrums. The scrum clock will not stop to allow teams to alternate players, with teams to be penalised if they exceed the time limit.
