Reece Walsh has become embroiled in drama with the NRL Grand Final just around the corner after he was filmed responding to a comment made by a Penrith fan.
The footage showed Walsh walking in Circular Quay to the team hotel after the NRL’s Fan Fest on Thursday. A teenage Penrith fan allegedly told the star fullback “Moses Leota will take your head off”, warning him of the risk of the imposing Panthers forward.
Walsh could be heard in the video responding “I’ll take your mum’s”, before continuing to walk off with his teammates and security. Picture: Adam Head“It’s difficult for Walshy. The amount of people that hate him... thankfully most people love him. But we’re in a bit of foreign territory here in New South Wales so there are people jealous of Reece because of the way he plays, his looks and all those things,” he said. “That’s something he’s going to have to get on top of for the rest of his career because the great players going back to Wally Lewis were often heckled and booed in Sydney, so he’s got to get used to that and just get on with things. But you can’t take the Nerang out of the Nerang boy. “We understand there’s an investigation but there won’t be much in it... Walshy is nice and tough and he’s from a great area in Queensland. Things aren’t going to always go to script or to plan.” Broncos coach Kevin Walters defended Reece Walsh, saying he is"nice and tough". Picture: Bradley Kanaris/Getty Images Three months ago Walsh was suspended for three games for contrary conduct following an expletive-laden spray which was believed to be in the direction of the referee. The 21-year-old denied the spray “What the f*** do you mean c***” was directed towards referee Chris Butler and was aimed at teammate Patrick Carrigan, however he copped the suspension and admitted he needs to improve his conduct. “Obviously I know I’m a role model to young kids and the community and I’m going to continue to work hard and continue to get better at the areas I need to get better at,” he said after the judiciary’s outcome in June. Walsh’s suspension eliminated him from the running to secure any awards at the Dally M Awards, where he could have been a contender for fullback of the year which instead went to Newcastle’s Kalyn Ponga. The Queensland fullback re-joined Brisbane this year and has easily had his best season yet after two years with the New Zealand Warriors where he made his NRL debut. His brilliant club form landed him a berth in the Queensland Maroons side for the 2023 State of Origin series, helping lead the side to a second consecutive series win after playing in the first two matches. In 21 games, Walsh scored nine tries and created another 25 as the Broncos finished in second place after missing the finals in 2022. Comfortable victories over the Melbourne Storm and the Warriors in the finals series has seen them cruise into the Grand Final, with the task of thwarting Penrith’s charge for a three-peat on Sunday night.
