NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned even with 80 per cent of the population vaccinated, high case numbers could still mean residents will be under restrictions.

“Whilst there will not be complete freedom at 70 per cent or even 80 per cent depending on the case numbers, life will be much freer than what it is today and that's the point I want to make," she said.

On Monday she stressed that reaching the vaccination targets will provide health teams and the state government with options to see what freedoms could be provided to residents, the Delta variant would still need to be contained. “We know that whilst the Delta variant in particular is very active around the world, there will always be a level of protection we need to have,” she warned.

While Ms Berejiklian offered an “absolute assurance” that once the 6 million jab target was reached there would be extra freedoms she did not guarantee a total relaxation of the restrictions.
