NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says “everyone has a right to protest but not in this time” as the nation looks to recover from the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Mass protests were held across Australia on the weekend to stand in solidarity with the United States’ Black Lives Matter movement, sparked by the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in police custody. Mr Barilaro told Sky News he “condemned those marches on the weekend”.

“We have just spent months and months putting lockdowns in place to protect all lives, to protect all of our communities, businesses have been hurt, the economy has been smashed – it was reckless and those protests should not have gone ahead,” he said. “I feel that we’ve had three months of messaging gone out the window.
