New South Wales detected its first locally acquired infection of monkeypox on Sunday bringing the state's total caseload to 42.

Monkeypox - which was last month declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance by Australian authorities - causes a distinctive bumpy rash, skin lesions and flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches.
