As the NSW Coalition prepares for state election, it has unveiled an initiative giving drivers the option to offset their emissions for as little as $80.

Drivers in NSW will be able to offset the emissions generated by their car when they pay their registration under a new government scheme inspired by airlines like Qantas which offer offsets along with their airfares.said the initiative would give motorists the option to offset one year’s emissions for as little as $80.

“The average car generates about 2.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, which can be fully offset by purchasing $80 of carbon offsets at the point of registration,” Mr Kean said.“The option is voluntary, and participants can choose to offset any amount between $5 and $200 when they register their vehicle online.”

The scheme has taken some inspiration from initiatives in other industries including aviation where customers have the option to pay a premium to offset the emissions created by flying.
