Horticulture committee chair for NSW Farmers Guy Gaeta has accused supermarkets of ripping off farmers and consumers by charging more for fresh fruit and vegetables at the checkout.
Horticulture committee chair for NSW Farmers Guy Gaeta claimed supermarkets were charging more at the checkout despite paying farmers the same or even less for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Mr Gaeta claimed a farmer from Coffs Harbour was selling Lebanese cucumbers to Coles at $60 a box or $6kg, which the retailer then sold for $12.90 per kilo to consumers. Mr Gaeta, who has grown apples and cherries in Orange, New South Wales, for 35 years, said it was “not morally right” and has called for change. “We’ve got to change the rules…farmers have got say no to these big businesses.”
“Last year, when the market price for fruit and veg was in decline, we passed those savings on to customers in the supermarket,” the retailer said. “While remaining focused on managing the supply change challenges, we are also helping shoppers manage the impact of inflation by providing better value options through a wider range of products at competitive prices,” Mr Jones said.
