A wet summer is set to grant NSW farmers a near-record winter harvest just in time to offset a staggering rise in business costs. 9News
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences is predicting this year's NSW winter crop production to be 14.7 million tonnes, about 33 per cent higher than the ten-year average.
New South Wales crop farmer Andrew Pursehouse said current moisture levels at his property on the Liverpool Plains has seen his winter crops off to a "perfect" start. The national summer crop production in 2021–22 is also estimated to reach a new record of 5.5 million tonnes."The moisture levels in the ground are very full," Pursehouse told 9News."With the full moisture profile and the prices that we're seeing, it looks like a very positive year.
But while Pursehouse said he's seeing "record prices", he's also having to cop record-high business costs."Also naturally the diesel that we use a lot, we've budgeted an extra 50 per cent of that as well."He said canola seeds have hit record prices, selling for about $900 to $1000 per tonne up from the usual $600 per tonne."Normally around $400 to $500 a tonne - we're getting about $700 a tonne.
"Canada is the biggest grower of durum wheat in North America and in the world, and when they have a problem, I guess it's bad for them but good for us.""We were feeling it before the war," he said."But with the pretty handy yields that we've had, I guess we'll keep the wolves away from the door a bit longer."
