Firefighters in NSW are rejoicing with heavy rainfall already helping to put out fires in the state's north, and more forecast for the coming days.

Later Friday, the heavy rainfall and flash flooding risk will move to the south to include Sydney, Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.

Flood warnings have been issued for Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Taree, Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney,In the two hours to 4.18am, Cape Byron recorded 115mm of rain, while Byron Bay saw 102mm. "We'll still see showers and rain periods along the north coast. But we will also see the Hunter and Sydney metro[politan] areas come into play as that coastal trough starts to shift southwards," said the Bureau of Meteorology's Mike Funnel. "This system will be a multi-day event. However, the inland isn't expecting totals as high as the coastal areas," he said.

"So the focus will remain on the coast, initially with the northeast coast, moving down to the Hunter and Greater Sydney. And then the focus really does shift to the south coast Sunday and Monday." Over the weekend, metropolitan Sydney is expected to record up to 100mm of rain, while the city's west is forecast to experience up to 150mm of rainfall.Big Creek Dam in Rogersville this morning.
