NSW will establish a dedicated Reconstruction Authority in response to an independent report set up to investigate floods that devastated the Northern Rivers.
Compared with all other infrastructure options, the report finds that raising the dam wall is “predicted to have the single largest impact on flood mitigation”.
Recommendations in the report regarding the Reconstruction Authority suggest it would be similar to one established in Queensland after the deadly 2011 floods in south-east Queensland that claimed more than 11 lives. The authority would be enshrined in legislation to be introduced by the end of the year.
It will also be responsible for sourcing and allocating reconstruction funding from the NSW government, the federal government and philanthropic sources, making sure it is spent efficiently, effectively and distributed equally to impacted communities.
